David Gold, one of the City’s top litigators, is famous for his skills of argument and persuasion. But how successful was he at persuading his own partnership during his five-year term as senior partner? DAVID ROBINSON reports.
David Gold has earned his reputation as a legal rottweiler. A few years ago, Herbert Smith’s client, a British biotechnology company, was locked in a bitter fight with an American pharmaceutical giant over unpaid royalties.
At the mediation, Gold persistently questioned the other side’s lawyers. He never let up. “Instead of quietly waiting for my turn to speak, whenever the other side spoke, I questioned them. I sought to put them off their guard and unsettle them,” Gold recalls. “The message I was giving the opponent’s client was: do your lawyers know what they’re doing?”
