This year’s FTSE Survey looks back at the years 2004-09. How did the boom change the balance of power among leading firms – and, now it’s over, where do the firms stand? RAVINDER CASLEY GERA reports.


Since 2004, the market has gone from downturn to boom and back to downturn again; the largest UK law firms grew to unprecedented levels of size and turnover, but have now returned to around 2004 levels. But while some of the gains of the last few years have proven fragile, the growth in firms’ FTSE client bases is proving more resilient. As our “Winners & Losers” tables (pp. 11-12) show, large numbers of firms have increased their mentions by two or more in both the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, while only a handful have seen their number of mentions decline.
